If you are unsure about a situation or have not been trained properly, reach out to someone that can help you! Never attempt anything you do not know how to do. Reach out to someone for help. There's always an outlet for additional help! Make good decisions! When should I do a leak check? Any ECC Call for a gas leak If any customer: smells gas, out of gas, unexplainable usage of gas, service has been interrupted, customer requested, or when in doubt always perform a leak check. Do not leave until you make it safe! How do I do a leak check? Make sure gas is turned off at tank before doing a leak check! Identify your regulator! Use the proper gauge. Twin stage regulators always use a 30 pound gauge on high side (Top Port). Low side always use a magnehelic gauge (Bottom Port). 30lbs pound gauges can be used with a Twin and First stage regulator. Some regulators may have 3 ports, never tap in to the very top port (that's tank pressure) and will blow your gauge! Never use a magnehelic gauge on high flow regulators. Click "Show me " to see a picture of what port to test with proper gauge. Twin Stage: Commonly (grey ) or (brown ) regulators. Show me First Stage: Commonly (red ) regulators. Show me Second Stage: Commonly (green ) or (brown ) regulators. Show me First and foremost always turn off the tank before a leak check! Go inside and inspect ALL appliances before doing a leak check. Pressurize the tank if the tank is empty. Hook up your gauge of choice to the proper regulator with teflon tape. Screw gauge into the proper port. Slowly pressurize the system, then bleed down gauge to 5psi (30lbs Gauge) or 9inches for (Magnehelic Gauge). The gauge should hold for three minutes. If it drops one psi or 1 inch of water column that is a fail! If gauge does not drop within three minutes , then the leak check has passed! If leak check fails, make sure your gauge is tightened all the way! Spray your gauge down with leak detector to rule out your gauge is not leaking. Retest the system. Still leaking? Go back and shut off one appliance at a time and retest the system until you can identify what appliance is leaking. If all appliances are shut off at the gas valve and a leak is still present, make sure to turn off the gas to the house and check for a leak between the tank and the house, retest again. If the leak is still present, then the leak could be under ground. You will need to Red Tag the system and lock off if it's a company owned tank . If it's a customer owned tank , you will need to disconnect the pig tail from the tank and turn the tank completely off and red tag it. If only one appliance is leaking and you can safely shut the gas off to it to make it safe, you only need to Red Tag that appliance! Notify customer to reach out to a plumber for repairs! Leak Check complete, now what? Document everything! If the system has passed a p roper leak check, it is now safe to turn the gas back on. You will need to fill out a Notice of Interruption form . Make sure to always get a signature from customer and docu ment everything on the form! Ask customer if they need help lighting the pilots. Remember you are the professional not them. If customer wants to light their own pilots, remember to always document that and have them sign it! Remember to take a picture of the Service of Interruption form for our records! Lock Off When should I lock off a tank? Only lock off Company Owned tanks! For any reason you cannot maintain a leak in the system you will need to lock it off. Never lock off a Customer Owned tank! You will need to disconnect the pig tail from the tank and turn off the service valve. Make sure to red tag the tank and have it signed . Good practice is to always take a picture of what you did! Always let the customer know what you did and inform them to any repairs that they need and advise them to call a professional plumber. Reassure them that their safety is your number one priority and that you need to make sure they are safe when you leave!
